The Legend of Satan’s Hollow
Posted: 03.17.2025 | Updated: 03.17.2025
The Legend of Satan’s Hollow is one of the best-known and most disturbing urban legends in Ohio’s history. Satan’s Hollow is located in the suburb of Blue Ash, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Cincinnati, in a secluded wooded area. Although the site might look like just a series of drainage tunnels to some, stories of satanic rituals and demonic entities have made Satan’s Hollow a paranormal hotspot.

What Is The Legend of Satan’s Hollow?
The origins of the legend of Satan’s Hollow remain something of a mystery but the story has been told for decades. It’s said that in the 1980s, a group of Satanists would meet in the tunnel and perform black masses where they made both animal and human sacrifices. The Satanists’ ultimate goal was to summon Satan himself, and some believe they did just that.
By allowing the devil into the world of the living, these Satanists created a portal to Hell in an unassuming drainage tunnel. Since then, there have been countless reports of paranormal phenomena and demonic activity. Some even claim that this portal to Hell has cursed the area.
The chilling stories that come from Satan’s Hollow are ones you won’t soon forget.
History of Satan’s Hollow

Satan’s Hollow is made up of a massive network of drainage tunnels that span the length of several football fields. The age of these tunnels is unknown, but they would have been around in the late 70s and early 80s when reports of Satanic worship were first reported.
While there’s nothing especially scary about a drainage tunnel (unless you’ve read IT), Satan’s Hollow does look like the kind of place that would be haunted. It’s located deep in a secluded wooded area, making visitors feel like they are cut off from the outside world. The mouth of the main tunnel is covered in years of graffiti created by local teens. There’s more graffiti inside, which becomes more disturbing as you go further into the tunnel.
One of the centerpieces of graffiti is a giant pentagram with “666” written on top of it. No one knows who left this graffiti, but it’s clearly an homage to the Satanic origins of the tunnels. Another unsettling message is a piece of graffiti that reads “Turn Back Now” just before reaching the central part of the tunnels.
There’s a central area where the tunnels converge that is known as the Altar Room. This hexagonal room is rumored to be the very spot where the devil was conjured and appeared before the Satanists. It is also said to be the epicenter of paranormal phenomena and the site of a literal portal to Hell. Weirdly enough, there are reports of portals to Hell in Ohio going all the way back to 1853, but Satan’s Hollow remains the most infamous.
Dangerous Tunnels
It’s important to note that Satan’s Hollow is located on private property and is not open to the public. Local police say they regularly have to chase teens out of the tunnels and make a couple of arrests each year. Neighbors complain of people traipsing through the woods and trespassing on property in the middle of the night as they attempt to locate the Hollow.
Satan’s Hollow is dangerous for non-paranormal reasons. The tunnels are still active and can suddenly flood with water. They’re also cramped, making it impossible for most people to stand up straight. Access to certain tunnels is only possible by climbing rusting metal ladders built into the tunnel walls. One wrong step and a trip to Satan’s Hollow might prove fatal.
Satanic Panic
No one knows who first told the tale of the Satanists at Satan’s Hollow, but considering that the story came about in the late 70s or early 80s, it likely had something to do with the Satanic Panic in the United States. During the Satanic Panic, thousands of individuals were wrongly accused of practicing Satanism and abusing children.
Most of these claims were based on virtually no evidence. Although the Satanic Panic lost steam by the end of the 1980s, there was enough fuel for an urban legend like Satan’s Hollow to quickly catch fire.
The Hauntings At Satan’s Hollow

Those who have dared to visit Satan’s Hollow have reported disembodied screams, demonic growling, and floating skulls inside the tunnels. Many have reported seeing a tall humanlike figure dubbed “The Shadow Man.” As the legend goes, The Shadow Man isn’t a man at all but a demon sent by Satan to guard the portal to Hell inside Satan’s Hollow. However, there are others who claim that the Shadow Man is Satan himself, meaning that more than a few people have encountered the devil inside the tunnels.
Although Satan’s Hollow is on private property and closed to the public, that hasn’t stopped paranormal investigators from looking into this haunted site. Several YouTubers have visited Satan’s Hollow over the years and documented an array of ghostly phenomena. Some have deemed Satan’s Hollow the scariest place they have ever investigated.
On the YouTube channel “Believe” A Paranormal Experience, investigators used modern ghost hunting equipment to communicate with spirits. The investigators heard footsteps in the tunnel even though they were standing still and were completely alone.
Using a spirit box, investigators asked if satanic worship had occurred in the tunnel, to which the spirit box replied, “Yes.” When investigators then asked who the Shadow Man was, the spirit box answered, “Satan.” These investigators were understandably disturbed by the evidence they had captured.
Haunted Cincinnati
Although some remain skeptical about the urban legend of Satan’s Hollow, those who have visited and encountered spirits firsthand are adamant that the area is truly haunted by a dark, demonic force. The fact that Satan’s Hollow is difficult to find and illegal to visit only adds to its eerie mystique.
